BCDock vs running it yourself.
You can run Business Central environments on your own Azure machine. Here is what that takes, and what the rate covers instead.
What every Business Central environment needs
-A Windows machine that can run Windows containers, with Docker set up for them.
-At least 2 CPUs and 16 GB of RAM recommended for each environment.
-The Business Central artifacts for your version and country, which are large downloads.
-A public HTTPS address with a valid certificate, for the web client and for publishing from VS Code.
Running it yourself
-Keep up with Microsoft's Business Central releases: download the new artifacts and rebuild your images for each version and country you use.
-Wait while each new Business Central version is set up: creating the first environment on a new version is slow.
-Pull the Business Central artifacts again for every new container image.
-Patch Windows, and keep the container tooling in step with it, or images start rebuilding from scratch.
-Renew the certificate before it expires, and keep DNS pointing at the right machine.
-Find the time for all of it, which comes out of your client work.
What BCDock covers

The active rate runs only while an environment is running, metered per second. Hibernated, it costs a small fraction of that, and an environment you delete costs nothing more.

Worked example - Pro · 5 envs · working hours
Standard: ~US$501/month. Months 1-6: ~US$351/month (save ~US$901 over six months). Year 2 onward: ~US$426/month locked.
Per-second metering. Monthly bill = base + (active hours x tier active rate) + (stored hours x US$0.012/hour). No caps, no rounding, no minimum billable unit. Multiple environments bill independently.
Pay-As-You-Go vs Starter - which is cheaper?+
Below ~119 active hours/month, Pay-As-You-Go is cheaper. Above that, Starter. The break-even: 19 = hours x (0.56 - 0.4), so the crossover is at roughly 119 hours.

Do prices change?+
We commit to giving 30 days notice before any price increase on existing plans. Founder Program customers lock in their rate for 3 years from signup.
Is there an annual or prepay option?+
Not yet. Per-second billing is the priority - prepay options are on the roadmap for Business and above.
Why no flat fee per environment?+
Because a hibernated environment is just blob storage at US$0.012/hr - charging you a flat env fee for idle state is the kind of billing that punishes exploration. We want you to keep environments around.
